About Ellie
Working from my pottery studio in the Scottish Borders, my interests lie in the subtle disruptions that different making and firing processes can create within the ceramic surface.
I explore this through wood firing which I often combine with salt and soda glazing - processes which I first encountered during my training at Clay College in Stoke-on-Trent. After graduating I sought further experience within these traditions and was fortunate to spend time with master potters Sabine Nemet, Andy Priestman and Micki Schloessingk.
In the Autumn of 2023 I began to set up my own studio with all the knowledge so generously shared with me and it is from here I produce my wheel thrown and hand built ceramics.
Inspiration
Crafting with both form and function in mind, I believe the enduring quality of a piece comes from its simple beauty.
My practice fuses traditional approaches, such as wood firing, with a more contemporary design-led approach to form. I enjoy being able to take the essence of a 3,000 year old pot and make it fit for the modern home.
“Have nothing in your house you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”
— William Morris
Process
Working in both stoneware and porcelain I compliment these by sourcing local materials such as wood ash and clay. The majority of my work is thrown on a continental style kick wheel though I also enjoy the slow but joyful freedom hand building can bring to my practice. The work is then fired in a wood fired kiln to 1300 degrees celsius where the effects of ash and salt can take centre stage. Through these methods and the nature of handmade work each piece is made unique.
